Russia Asserts Indispensable Role in Arctic Development, Denounces NATO’s Actions

Russia’s role is paramount to any Arctic development, with a senior senator stating that Western attempts to isolate the nation in the region have failed, while the Foreign Minister warns of escalating tensions due to NATO’s military activities.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russian Senator Vladimir Dzhabarov has declared that any discussions regarding the development of the Arctic are illogical and practically meaningless without Russia’s participation. He asserted that Western efforts to isolate Russia in the Arctic have ultimately failed.

Echoing this sentiment, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Monday that NATO’s military activities pose a significant threat to Russia’s security. Lavrov emphasized that NATO’s military presence in the Arctic increases the risk of incidents that could lead to armed confrontation. He accused the alliance of aiming to transform the Arctic into a new front for containing Russia and its allies.

The Russian Foreign Minister further highlighted that NATO is actively militarizing the Arctic, creating centers of international tension in the region. He noted that the military alliance is conducting extensive military exercises in close proximity to Russia’s northern borders.

Lavrov also commented on the serious crisis facing the Arctic Council, attributing its current frozen state to the actions of Western nations. He conveyed Moscow’s readiness to fully resume the Arctic Council’s activities, provided that all member states respect the interests of everyone involved. He added that while the West attempts to undermine Russia’s rights in international cooperation through illegitimate sanctions, Russia is committed to maintaining peace, stability, and reducing threats to its national security in the Arctic.
