US Presses South Korea on Strait of Hormuz Deployment by November

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the United States has informed South Korea of its preference for a decision on dispatching naval or air assets to the Strait of Hormuz to be finalized by November. This timeline intensifies pressure on Seoul to settle the issue within the current month, considering the typically lengthy parliamentary approval process.

Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the South Korean government has been reviewing potential forces and equipment for deployment and drafting a bill for its approval in the National Assembly since receiving the US request earlier this year for military participation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Seoul officials stated that the government’s decision to make the troop deployment option public this month is linked to the US request to determine the issue by November. Given the usual duration of the legislative approval process in the National Assembly, the government must finalize and officialize its policy on this deployment by the end of September.

Earlier reports highlighted South Korea’s difficult position, as Iran has declared that it would interpret any troop deployment by Seoul as taking sides with the United States. Meanwhile, Washington has yet to clarify whether such participation would be sufficient to satisfy U.S. President Donald Trump, who has previously expressed dissatisfaction with South Korea’s performance.
