India’s Modi Urges Equal Global South Representation, UN Security Council Reform at BRICS Summit
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at the commencement of the BRICS summit in New Delhi, advocated for equal participation from Global South countries in the formulation of international regulations and the reform of the United Nations Security Council. He asserted that BRICS is currently in a phase of “maturity.”.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the two-day BRICS summit in New Delhi on Saturday, Modi stated that Global South countries are at the forefront of global crises but positioned at the back of international decision-making. He urged for a shift from a hierarchy of privileges to a platform for participation and cooperation.
The Indian Prime Minister emphasized that the reform of global governance should focus on three key areas: representation, accountability, and rule-making. He underscored that the reform of the UN Security Council can no longer be postponed.
Modi also stressed the necessity for equitable participation of nations in determining the future global rules. He noted that BRICS members respect each other’s perspectives and proceed through consensus. He added that the group opposes no country and strives to bring all nations along on a path of cooperation.
In his economic remarks, Modi stated that voting power, management positions, and policy priorities within international financial institutions should be determined based on current economic realities. He posited that countries accelerating global economic growth should also play a role in guiding global economic governance.
The BRICS summit in New Delhi is being attended by the Presidents of China, Russia, and Iran, along with other leaders of the bloc. The summit is taking place amidst the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran, now in its seventh month, and the protracted war between Russia and Ukraine, which has exceeded four years.
