Ethiopia Expels Eritrean Diplomats, Expands Tensions with Egypt

Eritrea has severed all diplomatic ties with Ethiopia, a day after Ethiopia closed its embassy in Asmara and expelled Eritrean diplomats, while simultaneously declaring an Egyptian diplomat persona non grata amid escalating regional tensions.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Reuters reported on Thursday evening that Eritrea has severed all diplomatic relations with Ethiopia.

Hours before this announcement, the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it had closed its embassy in Eritrea and expelled 10 Eritrean diplomats from Addis Ababa.

The ministry declared that the closure of its embassy in Asmara was a direct and indirect consequence of hostile actions and escalations against Ethiopia.

In a related development, an Ethiopian diplomat announced that the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had declared an Egyptian diplomat a “persona non grata,” giving him 48 hours to leave Ethiopia.

Conversely, Egypt’s official Al-Sharq Al-Awsat news agency, citing an Egyptian official, reported a reciprocal measure where the counselor of the Ethiopian Embassy in Cairo was also declared a “persona non grata” and given 48 hours to depart Egypt.

Concurrently, the African Union Commission expressed grave concern over the rising tensions between Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt, urging all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint.
