Airlines Reroute Flights Amid Yemen Military Operations and Saudi Airspace Concerns

International airlines are altering flight paths to avoid Saudi Arabian airspace, citing security concerns heightened by ongoing military operations in Yemen and new advisories on the kingdom’s air corridor safety.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Wall Street Journal has reported a shift in flight routes for several international airlines following new warnings regarding the security of Saudi Arabian airspace and continued military operations from Yemen targeting Saudi airports.

The newspaper cited the aviation security specialist group OpsGroup, which has issued a warning that Saudi Arabian airspace is unsafe at all altitudes. This advisory has prompted international airlines to reconsider their flight paths and reduce transit through the country’s skies.

The Wall Street Journal noted that recent operations from Yemen have altered the calculations of airlines that previously considered Saudi airspace a relatively safe transit route. Consequently, some carriers are rerouting their flights toward Central Asia and other regions, including paths near Damascus.

British Airways, which had continued to utilize Saudi airspace even amidst repeated Iranian attacks on U.S. bases in the region, has been compelled to reroute a significant portion of its flights between Mumbai and London via Central Asia to bypass Saudi skies, following the latest operations from Yemen, according to the report.

Similarly, India’s national carrier has modified its flight routes to Europe. Instead of crossing through central Saudi Arabia, its flights now utilize routes near the country’s northern borders and the vicinity of Damascus, the Syrian capital.
