The United States Supreme Court has officially rejected an emergency application filed by the Trump administration, which sought to compel the state of California to separate and withhold from counting nearly 20,000 disputed ballots.

Previously, the United States Department of Justice had petitioned the high court to mandate that votes cast by individuals whose names appeared on a list of suspected non-citizens be segregated and their tallying suspended until their citizenship status could be definitively verified.

This legal confrontation arose after election officials in California raised serious doubts regarding the accuracy and reliability of the data provided by the federal government. State authorities warned that isolating and potentially discarding these ballots could result in the disenfranchisement of eligible, qualified voters.
