Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Mohammed Tamim announced that a joint committee between Baghdad and Damascus has been established to oversee the modalities of reviving pilgrimage journeys to holy sites in Syria. He noted that once operational and security preparations are finalized, these religious tours are expected to resume at the beginning of 2027.

During a previous high-level visit by an Iraqi delegation to Syria, Syrian authorities pledged to provide the necessary framework and infrastructure to facilitate the return of pilgrims to the holy shrine of Sayyidah Zainab and other sacred locations across the country.

The joint delegation continues to review security assessments, streamline administrative processes, and address other vital prerequisites to ensure a smooth transition. Officials from both nations view the restoration of religious tourism as a key component of bilateral diplomatic and security discussions, aiming to regulate travel in alignment with Syria’s evolving conditions.

The revival of religious travel holds significant social and economic importance, particularly for hoteliers, local business owners, and tourism enterprises operating in the Zainabiyah district of Damascus.
