Marco Rubio Weighs Cabinet Resignation to Prepare for 2028 Presidential Bid

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is reportedly considering stepping down from President Donald Trump’s administration following the Republican midterm election setbacks to position himself for a 2028 presidential run.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is evaluating the scenario of resigning from President Donald Trump’s cabinet in the wake of the Republican Party’s setbacks in the congressional midterm elections, aiming to lay the groundwork for his candidacy in the 2028 presidential race.

Citing informed sources within the Republican Party, reports indicate that Rubio may step down from his position following the conclusion of the electoral process. These sources noted that he is currently considered a leading contender for the party’s nomination and may need to distance himself from the Trump administration and the ongoing tensions regarding Iran to bolster his chances of success.

In addition, U.S. Vice President JD Vance similarly attributed the electoral defeat to the confrontation with Iran, attempting to distance himself from the conflict. Meanwhile, speculations suggest that President Trump might hold Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Marco Rubio, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles accountable for the party’s poor performance.

British media sources also pointed out that despite holding the office of Secretary of State, Rubio has maintained a low profile regarding Iran-related dossiers over recent months. According to these sources, he has been largely sidelined from diplomatic consultations concerning West Asia and the Ukraine conflict, with leadership over these matters reportedly delegated to Trump’s special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
