Canada opposes the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank
Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote in a statement on Twitter: “Canada strongly opposes Israel’s decision to approve the construction of new settlements in the West Bank [Jordan River]”.
The ministry added that such actions by Israeli authorities are “contrary to international law” and “endanger the security of Palestinians, Israelis and other residents of the region.” Canada’s foreign ministry said: “We ask Israel to cancel this decision”.
Continuation of settlement construction by Israel in the West Bank of the Jordan River is one of the main obstacles to resolving the decades-long conflict between Palestine and Israel. In December 2016, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 2334, calling on Israel to immediately stop settlement activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. In response, Israel announced that it will not comply with the provisions of this document.
