Informed sources: Türkiye is in no rush to confirm Sweden’s accession to NATO

A Russian channel reported on Tuesday, quoting a source in the Turkish parliament, that the Ankara government is in no rush to finally ratify Sweden's NATO membership protocol.

According to the Fars News Agency International Group, despite the initial approval of Sweden’s membership protocol in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the Foreign Relations Committee of the Turkish Parliament, informed sources report the possibility of a delay in the final approval.

Today (Tuesday), the “Ryanovsti” network reported, quoting an informed source in Ankara, that it is clear that the Turkish government is in no hurry to approve the protocol of Sweden’s accession to NATO in the country’s parliament.

This source in the Turkish Parliament, who asked to remain anonymous, told RIA Novosti that the exact date for holding the voting session on Sweden’s NATO membership protocol has not been set in this legislative body.

According to this report, he also added: “We are in no rush. There are interconnected processes that we must follow. There is no pressure on us to meet any deadlines.” Finland and Sweden, both Nordic countries, are close to or border Russia after Moscow’s war against Ukraine began in February 2022. , applied for NATO membership.

Turkey confirmed Finland’s membership in the alliance in March but said it was waiting for Sweden to sign a June 2022 trilateral memorandum to address Ankara’s security concerns.

Any new NATO member must be approved by all current members, including Turkey, which has been a member of the alliance for more than 70 years and has the second largest army.

Previously, the spokesperson of the US State Department said that he welcomes the decision of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Turkish Parliament regarding Sweden joining the NATO alliance.
