Polish nationalist candidate wins presidential election
According to webangah News Agency, citing Reuters, Karol Nawrocki, the nationalist candidate in Poland’s presidential election, has won by a slim margin against his liberal Warsaw mayor opponent Rafał Trzaskowski.
Nawrocki’s victory marks a significant achievement for Europe’s conservatives backed by former U.S.President Donald Trump. Poland’s electoral commission confirmed Nawrocki secured 50.89% of votes in the second-round runoff.
The result will likely deepen political deadlock as Nawrocki is expected to use presidential powers to counter Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s liberal agenda. Tusk’s government seeks to reverse judicial reforms implemented by the previous nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party government.
Current President Andrzej Duda has blocked Tusk’s reform attempts, and Nawrocki appears set to continue this approach. Trzaskowski, representing the ruling Civic Coalition (KO) party, received 49.11% of votes.
Both candidates claimed victory immediately after exit polls were released late Sunday night – indicating an extremely tight race. Nawrocki, a conservative historian and amateur boxer, framed the election as a “referendum” on Tusk’s 18-month governance.
The president-elect posted on X: “The referendum on removing tusk’s government has succeeded.” Analysts expect Nawrocki will follow Duda in blocking any government efforts to legalize abortion or implement judicial reforms.
