China Responds to Trump’s Threat Against BRICS
China has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose an additional 10% tariff on countries supporting BRICS policies, according to a report by webangah News Agency citing Newsweek.
Mao ning, spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, stated: “BRICS is a vital platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing nations.” She emphasized that the bloc promotes “open, inclusive, and mutually beneficial collaboration” rather than confrontation, targeting no specific country.
The Chinese diplomat reiterated Beijing’s longstanding opposition to trade wars: “China has clearly expressed its stance multiple times regarding U.S. tariff hikes. Trade wars have no winners, and protectionism leads nowhere.”
Trump had declared on his social media platform Truth Social: “Any nation aligning wiht BRICS’ anti-American policies will face a 10% tariff penalty without exceptions.” However, he provided no clarification on what constitutes these alleged “anti-American policies.”
The 11-member BRICS alliance-comprising Brazil, Russia, india, China, South Africa, Saudi arabia, Egypt, UAE Ethiopia Indonesia and Iran-is currently holding its 17th summit in Brazil’s capital.
The development follows recent U.S.-China trade agreements where Washington eased certain restrictions while beijing accelerated exports of rare earth minerals.
At its latest meeting BRICS condemned both U.S./Israeli aggression against Iran and unilateral tariff increases.
