Argentina’s Grossi Aims for IAEA Director General Post
According to the english section of webangah News Agency, reporting via Mehr News Agency and Buenos Aires Times, Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has officially declared his intention to run for Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Grossi, 64, confirmed the news during a press conference in Washington, stating, “I will be a candidate for UN Secretary-General.”
He has long sought this top diplomatic position at the United Nations.
If successful,Grossi would become only the second UN secretary-General from Latin America after Javier Pérez de Cuéllar.
Grossi said that finalizing his candidacy process will begin “in the coming weeks.”
The UN Secretary-General position will become vacant in January 2027 when portuguese António Guterres’s term ends. The winner of that election serves a five-year term with eligibility for re-election.
This role traditionally rotates unofficially among different global regions. Expectations indicate that a candidate from Latin America is highly likely to assume the post in 2027.
