Argentina’s Grossi Aims for IAEA Director General Post

The Director General of the International Atomic⁢ Energy⁣ Agency ‍announces his candidacy‍ for UN Secretary-General.

According to the ⁣english section of webangah News Agency, reporting via Mehr News Agency ⁣and ⁤Buenos Aires Times, ‍Rafael‌ Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy⁤ Agency (IAEA), has officially ‌declared ⁢his intention to run for Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Grossi, 64, confirmed the news during a press conference in Washington, stating,‌ “I will be a candidate for‌ UN Secretary-General.”

He⁢ has long sought this top diplomatic position at ⁢the United Nations.

If successful,Grossi would become only the second UN secretary-General ‍from Latin America after Javier‍ Pérez⁢ de Cuéllar.

Grossi said that finalizing his candidacy ⁢process will ⁢begin “in the coming⁢ weeks.”

The UN Secretary-General position will become vacant in January 2027‌ when portuguese António Guterres’s term‍ ends. The winner of that ⁤election serves a five-year term with eligibility for ‌re-election.

This role traditionally rotates unofficially among different global regions. Expectations indicate that a candidate⁤ from ⁣Latin America is highly likely to assume the post in⁣ 2027.
