According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters, U.S. President donald Trump continues his management’s unprecedented efforts to take control from local police in Washington, D.C., by announcing the deployment of National Guard forces to Memphis, Tennessee.
Despite declines in violent crime rates in many U.S. cities,Trump is focusing on making crime a central issue. Arrests carried out under his orders in Democratic-led cities and states have sparked widespread protests, including demonstrations involving thousands of people last weekend in Washington.
The president told Fox News: “We are going into Memphis. Memphis is deeply troubled. We want to fix that problem just like we did in Washington.”
He added that the city’s Democratic mayor supports and welcomes the move. However, Mayor Paul Young told reporters he did not request the National Guard’s deployment.
Addressing Trump’s decision, Young said: “I want to be clear-I did not ask for the National Guard and I do not believe this will reduce crime rates. still, as this decision has been made, as mayor I am committed to strategic cooperation to ensure it happens successfully and strengthens our community.”
According to FBI data, Memphis-a city of 611,000 along the Mississippi River-is among America’s most crime-ridden areas. The U.S.Census Bureau reports that about 24 percent of its residents live in poverty-double the national average.
The Department of Justice deployed federal forces there previously during Trump’s first term as part of its 2020 anti-crime initiatives.
