80th United Nations General Assembly Opens; New York Hosts “Week of High-Level Events
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, which in turn quoted TASS, international leaders will spend a week discussing major global challenges. These include consolidating peace, lasting development, protecting human rights, gender equality, managing artificial intelligence, combating infectious diseases and mental disorders, and also addressing the impacts of climate change.
this week-long event marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. Its main theme is “together for a Better Future: 80 Years and Beyond for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”
Representatives from 193 UN member states will participate alongside observers from the Vatican and Palestine’s government. The european Union will also take part in upcoming debates.
Speeches will be delivered by heads of states, governments, and international delegations. High-level meetings along with hundreds of bilateral talks and thematic side events are scheduled from september 23 to 29-with a planned recess on Sunday.
Opening Session
The general debate opens with remarks by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Annalena Baerbock,President of this session’s General Assembly.
The first world leader to speak will be Luiz Inácio Lula da silva, President of Brazil-a tradition honoring Brazil’s former Foreign Minister Osvaldo Aranha. Aranha chaired both special sessions at the very first General Assembly meetings in Latin America in 1947. Following Brazil’s president is U.S. President Donald Trump.
About 30 speakers will address on day one-including leaders from Argentina, Vietnam, Iran, Jordan, Qatar, Poland, Serbia,Türkiye-and others. Day two features roughly 40 speakers including presidents from France,Ukrain,e Finland,and Slovakia.
Russia’s Participation
The Russian delegation led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will attend this year’s assembly; Lavrov is scheduled to speak on September 27. He is also set to participate in multilateral meetings within BRICS,CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization),G20,and the “Group friends Defending the UN Charter.”
Mariya Zakharova,Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson,told TASS earlier that dozens of bilateral and multilateral meetings involving Lavrov-including talks with U.S officials-are being planned as usual.
Masoud Pezeshkian,the First Vice Presidentof Iran,recently departed Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport en route to New York for this year’s annual UN General Assembly session.
Pezeshkian,is accompanied by a delegation intending to deliver speechesat the assembly.he is expected toduring this trip hold meetingswith leadersfrom European,countries,the region,and membersof BRICSandthe Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
