Resolution to Postpone Iran Sanctions Return Voted Today

The United Nations⁢ Security Council will vote today ⁣(Friday) ⁢on a draft resolution proposed by Russia and ⁣China to delay the reinstatement of sanctions on Iran.

According to the English‍ section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters, the UN ⁢Security Council will hold a vote today on a resolution put⁢ forward by Russia and China seeking to postpone reimposing UN sanctions on Iran ⁢for six ⁤months.

reuters reports that all UN⁣ Security Council sanctions against ⁣Iran are scheduled to be ‌reinstated at 8 p.m. US⁢ time ‍today.

Previously,⁤ Britain, Germany, and France accused the Islamic Republic of violating the 2015 nuclear agreement (JCPOA) while making baseless claims ‍without referencing the US’s unilateral withdrawal from the deal in 2018⁢ or⁣ violations committed by European parties. Aligning wiht Washington’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran,⁣ they triggered a 30-day countdown for activating the snapback mechanism.

The draft⁤ resolution‍ is considered unlikely⁤ to pass. In order to⁢ succeed in the ⁣15-member council vote, it needs at least‍ nine votes in favor without vetoes⁤ from London,⁣ Paris, or Washington.

Reuters cited diplomats who expect many abstentions in today’s vote.
