Resolution to Postpone Iran Sanctions Return Voted Today
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters, the UN Security Council will hold a vote today on a resolution put forward by Russia and China seeking to postpone reimposing UN sanctions on Iran for six months.
reuters reports that all UN Security Council sanctions against Iran are scheduled to be reinstated at 8 p.m. US time today.
Previously, Britain, Germany, and France accused the Islamic Republic of violating the 2015 nuclear agreement (JCPOA) while making baseless claims without referencing the US’s unilateral withdrawal from the deal in 2018 or violations committed by European parties. Aligning wiht Washington’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran, they triggered a 30-day countdown for activating the snapback mechanism.
The draft resolution is considered unlikely to pass. In order to succeed in the 15-member council vote, it needs at least nine votes in favor without vetoes from London, Paris, or Washington.
Reuters cited diplomats who expect many abstentions in today’s vote.
