Israel Rejects ‘Powerful Resistance’ in Iraq; Netanyahu Expresses Anger
Mehr News Agency, International Desk: Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime minister of Israel, claimed in his speech at the 80th united Nations General Assembly that he has attacked and will eliminate resistance groups in Iraq. Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein promptly responded, saying, “An attack on resistance groups is an attack on Iraq.” This raises questions about the United States’ stance regarding possible Israeli strikes against Iraq-a country considered a strategic partner by Washington.
To assess the likelihood of an Israeli attack on Iraq and the future of the resistance movement there, Mehr’s correspondent spoke with Hasan Akaras, a Turkish expert on resistance movements. The full interview follows:
Benjamin Netanyahu directly threatened Iraqi resistance groups during his speech at the 80th UN general Assembly and claimed he would destroy them. Almost immediately after these remarks, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein declared: “An attack on resistance groups is an attack on Iraq.” Given that Washington generally regards Iraq as a strategic partner, do you think the U.S. would allow Israel to strike inside Iraqi territory?
Netanyahu delivered this threat before an almost empty hall at the UN assembly. His body language and facial expressions conveyed intense anger rather than confidence or triumph. Despite claiming to have defeated major resistances such as Hamas, Hezbollah, Yemen’s fighters-and Iran itself-over the past two years of conflict, he resorted to threatening those same forces repeatedly. If Israel really had succeeded against these groups as Tel Aviv and some media circles suggest, why issue such threats? This indicates we cannot speak simply of victorious suppression of resistance forces.
The reason behind Netanyahu’s threat lies in Iraq’s strategic importance similar to Syria’s unique role regarding regional resistances. The Israeli regime refuses to accept a well-established and effective structure of powerful resistance inside Iraqi borders.
We have closely observed U.S.policies toward Syria and Iraq for some time now. Even though Washington officially calls Iraq a strategic partner-which aligns neither with popular sentiment nor governance within baghdad-the successive U.S. administrations have consistently treated Iraq primarily as a tool for safeguarding Tel aviv’s security interests across the region alongside their own geopolitical objectives. Therefore, there is little chance that Washington will block potential Israeli attacks against targets in Iraq.
This was clearly demonstrated in Qatar when Hamas leaders were targeted in Doha; Qatar’s air defense systems were effectively rendered blind during those strikes. American media reported that then-President Trump’s administration was forewarned about these attacks and approved them beforehand. If similar operations occur in Iraqi territory today or soon, it is unlikely Washington would take any different stance.
The truth is that *resistance* emerges from specific mindsets-ideologies rooted deeply within communities-fostered over time as defense mechanisms against oppression and tyranny locally experienced by people across this region.*
If armed movements exist throughout our region now they are manifestations of shared social awarenesss holding common beliefs shaped by collective experiences resisting occupation and injustice.
Why does Netanyahu believe he can extinguish this spirit merely by attacking armed factions while Palestine continues resolutely resisting under siege?
You cannot reduce Resistance solely to militant elements; it must be understood as seeing its origins embedded fundamentally within ideological convictions spreading among populations who oppose occupation violently enforced through violent criminality conducted daily decades-long across occupied lands.
Netanyahu assumes assassinating leaders or killing civilians indiscriminately can fracture ties binding militants with their base-but Gaza’s recent history denies this assumption categorically.
Look closely: despite relentless bombings obliterating towns; martyrdoms eliminating senior Hezbollah commanders; cities razed entirely- Lebanese citizens remain steadfast supporters without turning away from their Resistance cause.
Similarly strong support reverberates through Yemeni society backing its indigenous faction fighting external aggression firmly united behind both leadership & ideals they represent enduring despite war-ravaging devastation inflicted countless times as conflict escalated five years ago ultimately.
