Failed Stone Attack on Ecuador’s President
Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa survived an attack by a group of protesters who threw stones at his vehicle, in what a senior official described as a failed assassination attempt, according to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters.
Ines Monzano, Ecuador’s Minister of Habitat and Energy, who issued an official report on the incident, said about 500 protesters surrounded Noboa’s car and threw stones at it. Five protesters have been arrested in connection with the event.
The presidential office confirmed that those detained face charges of terrorism and attempted assassination.
Reuters could not independently verify reports of gunfire during the incident; however,Monzano stated that bullet marks were visible on the president’s vehicle after the attack.
The protests erupted following Noboa’s declaration last month to remove fuel subsidies across Ecuador.
