Peru’s President Dina Boluarte Ousted
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al-Araby al-Jadeed, Peru’s parliament voted to oust Dina Boluarte today, Friday.
In an early morning session on Friday, Peru’s president was removed from office with 118 votes in favor.
The Peruvian parliament held a nighttime meeting and voted by majority to dismiss the president over multiple financial, ethical, and political scandals.
The official reason given for her removal was “permanent ethical incompetence,” a charge that emerged amid months of protests, scandals, and public dissatisfaction with her government.
Boluarte did not attend the session and refused to present a defense. This absence allowed lawmakers to expedite the removal process.
The speaker of parliament will assume presidential duties until elections scheduled for April next year take place.
Boluarte assumed power in 2022 after former president Pedro Castillo was removed for attempting to dissolve parliament. However, her decision to cling to power without stepping down for new elections sparked violent protests that resulted in 49 civilian deaths.
In recent weeks, new allegations have surfaced against Boluarte involving accepting luxury watches as bribes and abusing public office. These scandals combined with economic crisis and rising poverty have further undermined her political legitimacy.
Political analysts say right-wing and center parties that previously supported Boluarte are now distancing themselves ahead of upcoming elections to avoid fallout from public discontent.
