Spain Faces Nationwide Strike and Widespread Protests in Solidarity with Gaza
Tens of thousands took part in a public strike across several Spanish cities on Wednesday, protesting against what they called the “ongoing genocide” of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to webangah News Agency, citing Al Jazeera via Mehr News Agency.
The strike was organized by major labor and student unions. Protesters carried flags and banners supporting Palestine and demanded an end to military and diplomatic cooperation with Israel.
Chanting slogans backing Palestine, demonstrators urged Spanish Prime minister Pedro SánchezS government to adopt a “decisive and courageous” stance in support of Palestine and Gaza.
This action comes amid rising public outrage over Israel’s attack on a “resistance fleet” and the detention of activists aboard it.
The general strike represents the largest mobilization of its kind in Europe since the war on Gaza began. It highlights strong solidarity from trade unions and student movements with spain’s popular opposition to Israeli policies.
Spain’s government is considered one of Europe’s most vocal critics of israel’s assault on Gaza.
Madrid had previously supported a complaint brought by South Africa at the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of “genocide” against Gaza’s population.
