Security Council Chief: Guterres to Report on Iran and Resolution 2231

The Slovenian Ambassador to the United Nations, whose country ⁤assumed the rotating presidency of the Security Council ‍this month, announced that the UN Secretary-General will present a report on Resolution 2231 concerning Iran to the council.

According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and IRNA, Samuel Žbogar, slovenia’s Permanent Representative to the United⁤ Nations, told reporters at UN headquarters in New ‍York on Monday local time-coinciding with his country’s assumption⁤ of leadership over‍ the 15-member Security Council⁣ for December 2025-that the council will receive a report from‌ the Secretary-General on Resolution 2231 regarding Iran‌ on December 13.

He stated that discussions with ambassadors took place Monday morning. Some believe that Resolution 2231 is⁢ no longer in effect, while others maintain that a report is‍ being prepared and therefore a meeting should be held about it.

The Slovenian envoy added that a request ⁤to review this resolution will ⁣likely be submitted in december. Once such a request is made, members ‌will decide whether to⁢ convene a session.

Regarding efforts by three European countries and the United States to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran, Žbogar said actions would take place⁤ next year (2026), starting in⁣ about one month.

Without mentioning opposition from Russia and China within the Security ‍Council, he acknowledged that “the first step is establishing a sanctions committee and appointing its chair. However,‍ this will be challenging as consensus is required.”
