Egypt Assumes Leadership of African Union Peace and Security Council

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Egypt has assumed the presidency of the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) as of February 1. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the country replaces the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which held the council’s presidency in January.

Egypt’s primary focus during its tenure will be addressing ongoing conflicts in Africa. The PSC, established in 2003, is responsible for implementing African Union decisions and preventing and resolving disputes. The council comprises 15 member states, with five elected every three years and ten every two years.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry noted that leading the council comes amid complex security, political, and developmental challenges across Africa, as well as regional and international uncertainties. During its presidency, Egypt aims to enhance the council’s effectiveness and adopt a comprehensive approach to strengthening peace, security, and governance structures in Africa.
