According to the international group Tasnim News Agency, 79 diplomats and the employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, in an unprecedented action, expressed concern in a letter to the foreign minister of this country about the policies adopted regarding the attack of the Israeli regime on Gaza.
According to “Helsinki Times”, the move, which is considered unprecedented in Finnish diplomatic circles, reflects growing concerns within the foreign ministry about the country’s Middle East policy.
Signatories The letter explicitly asks the Finnish Foreign Ministry to call for a cease-fire in Gaza and to criticize Israel’s excessive use of force and potential violations of international law. These reactions are planned after recent Israeli attacks in which civilian infrastructure including hospitals and schools have been targeted in Gaza.
The publication of this letter occurred after the change of approach of Finland during the voting in the United Nations. During this vote, which was held in October, Finland refused to agree to the UN resolution that called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and cited the failure to condemn Hamas attacks as the reason for this decision.
This is despite the fact that in December and less than a month after receiving this letter, Finland voted in favor of the UN General Assembly resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
Elina Waltonen, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland, in response to this letter, claimed that her country’s position in the Middle East is based on human rights, democracy, rule of law and equality, and that her country is ready regardless of identity. Condemn the perpetrators of crimes in this conflict.
