US-Backed Iran Resolution Expected to Pass IAEA Board Amid Diplomatic Maneuvering

A US-initiated resolution targeting Iran’s nuclear program, initially met with European hesitation, has been revised into a joint text by the E3 and the United States, increasing its likelihood of adoption at the upcoming International Atomic Energy Agency Board of Governors meeting. The resolution reportedly omits immediate referral to the UN Security Council.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Lawrence Norman, a correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, reported on social media platform X that a draft resolution by the United States for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors’ meeting this week, which European nations (E3) were initially reluctant to support, has been amended. Sources indicate it has now evolved into a joint resolution by the three European countries and the U.S., making its approval highly probable.

Norman further elaborated on the resolution’s content, stating, “In my understanding, the U.S. pressure to immediately refer Iran’s case to the UN Security Council has been removed from the resolution as a compromise.”

In related developments, Reuters reported yesterday that the U.S. was lobbying other member states of the IAEA Board of Governors to support a draft resolution urging Tehran to disclose the status of nuclear sites that were bombed and the enriched uranium stored therein, citing alleged American-Zionist aggression against Iran. The draft resolution, which Reuters had seen on Sunday and was published ahead of this week’s quarterly board meeting, was noted to complicate current negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, as Tehran was expected to react with anger to any resolutions against it at the IAEA.

This comes despite the IAEA having previously affirmed the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. A section of the purported text, observed by Reuters, stated: “Iran must provide accurate information regarding nuclear materials and nuclear facilities under safeguards to the Agency and grant all access the Agency requires to verify this information.” The U.S.’s adversarial efforts against Iran are occurring amidst ongoing discussions concerning a ceasefire extension and an agreement between Tehran and Washington.
