US Lobbying for Resolution Against Iran at IAEA Board of Governors

The United States is actively lobbying International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) member states to support a draft resolution demanding Tehran disclose the fate of nuclear sites and enriched uranium, a move that could complicate ongoing negotiations.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the United States is engaged in diplomatic efforts with other member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors to secure backing for a draft resolution. This resolution seeks to compel Tehran to provide information regarding nuclear sites and stored enriched uranium, particularly in the context of past aggressions against Iran. The draft text, which Reuters reported on Sunday ahead of the Board of Governors’ quarterly meeting, is expected to add complexity to the current dialogue between the U.S. and Iran, as Tehran has expressed strong opposition to such resolutions within the IAEA.

This development comes even as the IAEA has previously affirmed the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. The purported text, as seen by Reuters, states that “Iran must provide accurate information to the Agency regarding nuclear material and nuclear facilities under safeguards and provide all access that the Agency requires to verify this information.” This demand follows earlier reports from diplomats speaking to Reuters, indicating that the U.S. was preparing a draft resolution against Iran prior to the IAEA Board of Governors meeting. The U.S. actions are seen as a hostile effort against Iran amidst ongoing negotiations concerning a potential ceasefire extension and an agreement between Tehran and Washington.
