Ottawa Council Moves to Rename Trump Street Amid Trade Tensions
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Ottawa City Council is considering a name change for a street designated as Trump Street, with “Obama Street” and “Taco Street” among the proposed alternatives, as reported by CNN via Mehr News Agency.
In a unanimous vote on Wednesday, the Ottawa City Council took the first step to rename Trump Street, a residential road in Ottawa’s Central Park neighborhood that has carried the U.S. President’s name for approximately 25 years.
Amidst the intensifying trade war between the two nations and President Trump’s frequent verbal attacks on Canada, some local city council members have stated they find the name embarrassing and do not wish for anything in Ottawa to be named after Trump.
The council’s vote came just one day before President Trump signed an executive order directing the U.S. government to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America” – a move reminiscent of his renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America.”
Ottawa City Councillor Tim Tierney told CNN that suggestions for the new name included Obama Street, Ontario Street, Canada Street, Beaver Street, Gulf of Mexico Street, Canada Goose Street, Pelosi Street, and even Taco Street – a sarcastic nod to the English phrase “Trump always K.O.s,” where the first letters spell out “Taco.”
This is not the first time the Ottawa community has attempted to change the name of Trump Street. While the issue seemed settled after a 2021 vote, Tierney informed CNN that the controversy surrounding President Trump’s renaming of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” has brought the matter back to the forefront.
