Canada’s Prime Minister Affirms ‘Lake Ontario’ Name Amid U.S. Renaming Attempt

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has firmly stated that the name ‘Lake Ontario‘ will permanently remain, reacting to an initiative by U.S. President Donald Trump to change the appellation of the significant waterway. The name ‘Lake Ontario’ predates the formation of Canada and the declaration of American independence, underscoring its historical significance.

President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday, directing the renaming of Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ within U.S. federal government documents and geographic systems. This decision emerges at a time of heightened commercial friction between Washington and Ottawa.

President Trump has resumed a trade dispute with Canada, imposing a 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian goods. Following the breakdown of bilateral negotiations, he continues to threaten further actions. Lake Ontario is one of the Great Lakes situated along the Canada-U.S. border, sharing its name with the Canadian province of Ontario.
