UN Official Warns of Nuclear Test Resumption Danger Amid Geopolitical Tensions

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Izumi Nakamitsu, head of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs, has highlighted deep geopolitical tensions, widening rifts, and a decrease in trust, alongside concerns about the potential resumption of nuclear weapons testing.

Late last year, the United States and Russia, possessing the world’s largest nuclear arsenals, exchanged threats regarding the restart of nuclear tests.

Nakamitsu emphasized the extreme danger associated with even contemplating such a path. She stated that resuming nuclear testing would undo decades of efforts to de-escalate tensions and would pave the way for an arms race, a development that absolutely must not begin.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 30th anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), Nakamitsu lauded the treaty’s global verification system but stressed that the treaty has yet to enter into force.
