US Threatens Further Tariffs on Canadian Imports Amid Trade Dispute

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the United States may impose additional tariffs on Canadian imports following Ottawa’s response to measures enacted by Washington, stated Jamison Greer, a U.S. trade representative. Citing RIA Novosti, data published by Mehr News Agency indicates that Greer emphasized Washington’s hope that the energy sector will remain unaffected by the trade conflict.

The U.S. official threatened that President Donald Trump has numerous options available. The latest developments in the trade war between Canada and the United States saw negotiations between the two countries halt on August 21, 2026, after months of disagreements over tariffs and trade terms.

The Trump administration imposed a 50% tariff on a portion of Canadian imports valued at approximately $27.6 billion starting August 22. This action encompassed some goods even covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement on Free Trade.

In response, the government of Prime Minister Mark Carney in Canada announced it would implement retaliatory tariffs of 15%, 25%, and 50% on American goods worth around $27.6 billion, effective September 8. These tariffs target sectors including steel, aluminum, dairy products, home appliances, agricultural equipment, paper and pulp, and electronic products.
