Norway Bolsters Artillery Strength Near Russian Border
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Norway has established an artillery battalion within its Finnmark Brigade, strategically positioned close to the Russian border, as part of a broader initiative to enhance its military capabilities in the Arctic region. Norwegian media reports indicate this move is integral to Oslo’s extensive plan to bolster military power in the country’s north, adjacent to the Russian frontier.
The Norwegian Army has disclosed that this battalion is equipped with four K9 Vidar self-propelled artillery systems, with an additional twenty-four systems slated for delivery to the brigade by 2028. The artillery’s range is reported to exceed 40 kilometers.
The Finnmark Brigade, formed in 2025, is stationed in northern Norway near the Russian border and is designated for expansion into a larger and more capable unit in the coming years through increased personnel and equipment.
Concurrently, Russia has voiced concerns regarding Norway’s military buildup in the region. The Russian Ambassador to Oslo stated that the deployment of new artillery and Norway’s plans to acquire K239 Chunmoo rocket systems could potentially target Russian installations on the Kola Peninsula.
