Iceland Summons U.S. Ambassador Over President Trump’s Map

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Iceland has summoned the United States ambassador to Reykjavik in response to an image shared by U.S. President Donald Trump that placed Iceland and several other territories under the U.S. flag. Icelandic officials described the move as “completely inappropriate.”

The map, published on Trump’s Truth Social account, showed the United States, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean covered by the American flag, with the entire area labeled “United States of America.” President Trump offered no explanation for the image.

Thórdís G. Reynisdóttir, Iceland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, summoned Bill Lang, the U.S. ambassador to the country, who began his tenure just last month. The Icelandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Reykjavik’s position on the inappropriateness of the post was clearly conveyed during the meeting.

The publication of this image comes at a time when Trump’s past remarks about the necessity of acquiring Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark, had previously created tensions between Washington and Copenhagen. The European Union also recently announced an investment of 200 million euros in Greenland.

Mette Frederiksen, the Prime Minister of Denmark, has also emphasized that the government and people of Greenland have repeatedly stated their desire not to become American.
