Yellow Vests Resurface in France Amid Soaring Fuel Prices

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, rising fuel costs in France are once again exacerbating social dissatisfaction, with signs of an effort to revive the “Yellow Vest” movement coinciding with increased cost-of-living pressures.

The French newspaper Le Figaro reported that fuel prices in France have remained above 2 euros per liter for approximately six months, with a brief exception in June and July. This situation is placing significant strain on households, particularly those reliant on vehicles for daily commuting.

The newspaper highlighted the increase in gasoline and diesel prices, suggesting the potential formation of a new wave similar to the “Yellow Vest” movement. This movement began in 2018 in protest against fuel tax hikes and evolved into one of France’s largest social protests in recent years.

French media outlet La Dépêche reported that calls for the revival of the “Yellow Vest” movement are circulating on social media in response to rising fuel prices. According to the report, a key call has been made for October 17, aiming to transform virtual protests into a broader public demonstration.

These developments are occurring as the French government faces economic and political pressure due to increased energy costs. Le Figaro noted in its recent edition the growing pressure on the government stemming from escalating fuel prices and concerns about their economic repercussions.

The “Yellow Vest” movement originated in November 2018 as a reaction to fuel tax increases. For weeks, it involved gatherings, road blockades, and a presence in urban squares.

In its special report on the movement, the newspaper Le Monde described it as an initiative that started with fuel tax hikes and led to weekly protests and the obstruction of major roadways across France.
