China’s Xi Jinping May Cancel Meeting with US President Trump Over Taiwan Arms Sales

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a Japanese news outlet has reported on the potential cancellation of a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump. The decision by Washington to sell new weapons to Taiwan is cited as the primary reason for this possibility.

Kyodo News Agency reported that Xi Jinping may forgo meeting with Trump later this month. The likely reason for Beijing’s potential decision, according to the report, is the U.S. confirmation of new arms sales to Taiwan. China views this action as falling within the category of sensitive issues and red lines in its relationship with Washington.

These developments come as Taiwan has stated it remains in close contact with the United States. Beijing has previously taken a clear stance on the Taiwan issue and U.S. arms sales to the island, designating it as one of the most significant points of contention with Washington.
