Argentina Issues Two-Week Ultimatum to UK Over Falklands Oil Project

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Argentina has issued a stern warning to the United Kingdom, demanding the cessation of its oil project near the contested Falkland Islands within a two-week timeframe. The Argentine presidential office announced in a statement that failure to comply will result in the matter being brought before the International Court of Justice.

The President of Argentina has specifically instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government’s legal teams to commence the necessary procedures to halt the British oil venture. This move follows prior actions by Argentine groups, including war veterans and environmental lawyers, who initiated legal proceedings to stop the oil project conducted by the UK and Israel near the Falkland Islands coast in the South Atlantic.

These groups are actively pursuing legal avenues in Argentine courts to prevent the commencement of hydrocarbon exploration and extraction by two companies, Rockhopper Exploration of the UK and Navitas Petroleum of Israel, in the Sea Lion field, located 220 kilometers from the Falkland Islands. They assert that this project violates United Nations resolutions concerning the avoidance of unilateral actions in the presence of regional disputes.

This legal complaint emerges subsequent to a statement by Donald Trump, who indicated that the United States might reconsider its neutral stance on the disputed territory. These remarks were met with approval by the President of Argentina. Tensions between Argentina and the United Kingdom have historically been strained, dating back to the 1982 conflict, with Argentina continuing to assert its claim of sovereignty over the islands.
