Russia Urges Iran to Remain Party to Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russia’s Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has responded to statements suggesting Iran might withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), indicating that Moscow needs further clarification on Iran’s position. Peskov stated, “We have previously heard such remarks from the Vice-Speaker of the Iranian Parliament. This statement requires further explanation.”

He emphasized Russia’s stance, saying, “We do not want Iran to leave the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. We consider this treaty a cornerstone of the non-proliferation system and hope that Iran will continue to remain an important and responsible participant in this treaty.”

The Kremlin spokesperson also reiterated that Russia and its partners have consistently affirmed at various levels that Iran is not pursuing the development of nuclear weapons and has no program for their development. Peskov added, “Iran is committed to its obligations in the field of nuclear non-proliferation while continuing to develop its peaceful nuclear energy industry.”

These remarks follow an announcement by Ali Nikzad, the Vice-Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, that the parliament is examining the issue of Iran’s withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
