EU Energy Commissioner Urges Member States to Reduce Gas and Electricity Consumption

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the European Union’s Energy Commissioner, Dan Jørgensen, has urged member states to reduce their consumption of gas and electricity in light of “exceptionally low” gas reserves and price fluctuations as winter approaches. The call comes from Europa Press, citing data released by Mehr News Agency.

Europa Press reported on Tuesday, referencing a letter from Jørgensen to the energy ministers of EU member states, that he requested continued preparations for the winter season. Jørgensen stated in the letter that utilizing existing flexibility in gas storage regulations and reducing the storage target to 80 percent could help alleviate immediate price pressures and the cost of replenishing reserves.

He also urged member states to adopt or maintain measures, where appropriate, to continue injecting gas into storage or reduce demand for gas and electricity for as long as necessary. The EU Energy Commissioner acknowledged that while the situation remains “challenging,” there is currently no threat to the EU’s energy supply security.
