Saudi Arabia Halts Construction of Neom Stadium Amid Project Revisions

Saudi Arabia has temporarily halted the construction of the Neom Stadium, a key project intended for the 2034 FIFA World Cup bid, due to delays and scaled-down plans within associated developments. This move signals a broader review of mega-projects as the Kingdom navigates economic pressures.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Saudi Arabia has temporarily suspended the construction of the Neom Stadium, one of the country’s flagship projects for hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The decision, confirmed by two informed sources, is attributed to delays and a reduction in the scope of related projects.

The Neom Stadium was envisioned as a unique, suspended structure within the massive ‘The Line’ development, a project spanning 160 kilometers and intended to be a central symbol of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. The estimated cost for the stadium’s construction was approximately $2.5 billion, with a planned capacity of around 46,000 spectators, according to data from Mid Projects, a firm monitoring the region’s construction market.

However, the two sources indicated that the stadium’s construction program has been put on hold indefinitely. Representatives for Neom and the Saudi government’s communications center did not respond to requests for comment. The Saudi Ministry of Sports referred inquiries to the supreme body responsible for organizing the 2034 World Cup.

These developments occur as Saudi Arabia is actively involved in building or renovating 15 stadiums across five cities and developing dozens of training facilities for the 2034 World Cup. The total value of these undertakings is estimated at $22.7 billion, according to Mid Projects.

Earlier, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the Governor of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, stated that ‘The Line’ project is no longer a top priority and its full implementation is not essential before 2030, though he did not confirm the cancellation of any projects. The pause on the Neom Stadium follows intensified cost-cutting and review measures across Neom’s vast projects in recent months, prompted by economic strains resulting from regional conflicts and disruptions to oil exports.
