Albania Protests Escalate: Fire Erupts at Ministry of Education in Tirana

Protests in Albania entered their second day with escalating tensions, marked by a fire at the Ministry of Education building in Tirana and police use of tear gas against demonstrators.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, protests in Albania have intensified, reaching their second consecutive day with a significant incident: a fire broke out at the Ministry of Education building in Tirana on Wednesday. “Shqip” reported that police employed tear gas to disperse the protesting students.

A number of students scaled the walls and gained entry into the ministry’s grounds. Simultaneously, flames were observed emanating from the second-floor windows of the building.

The protesters had gathered in front of the ministry around 11 a.m. local time, with the number of participants exceeding that of the previous day. Demonstrators erected barricades using railings, set fire to trash bins and street advertising panels, and hurled stones and other objects at police forces.

Black smoke later emerged from the ministry building. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene to control the blaze, while clashes continued in the surrounding streets.

The European Union Delegation in Albania expressed concern over the escalating tensions and called for an investigation into the excessive use of force against protesters and journalists.

The delegation stated that it had taken note of reports concerning excessive police violence against protesters and journalists, emphasizing that police actions must be proportionate and respect fundamental rights.

The EU Delegation also urged all parties to refrain from further escalation and declared that constructive dialogue is the way forward to resolve disputes.
