Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi Sentenced to 25 Years for War Crimes
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Hashim Thaçi, the former president of Kosovo, has been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for war crimes. The trial took place in The Hague, Netherlands.
The proceedings involved former commanders of the Kosovo Liberation Army, including the former president, as well as Jakup Krasniqi, Kadri Veseli, and Rexhep Selimi. They were tried for committing war crimes such as deprivation of liberty, torture, and intentional homicide.
The court handed down sentences of 25 years to Thaçi and Krasniqi, 18 years to Veseli, and 13 years to Selimi. Prosecutors had sought a 45-year prison term for the commanders who were detained in The Hague.
The trial in The Hague is ongoing regarding accusations that Thaçi threatened witnesses. The Kosovo War was an armed conflict that took place in the region from February 1998 to June 1999. The conflict pitted the Yugoslav Army, which at the time comprised Serbia and Montenegro and controlled the region of Kosovo, against ethnic Albanian rebel groups operating under the banner of the Kosovo Liberation Army.
