France Deploys 70000 Police Officers Ahead of Nationwide Protests

French authorities have mobilized nearly 70,000 police officers across the country to counter a fresh wave of anticipated protests and potential unrest. The heightened security measures follow widespread demonstrations that previously caused significant damage to businesses and public infrastructure.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, French authorities are preparing to deploy nearly 70,000 police officers on Saturday to ensure readiness against a new wave of protests and potential unrest across various cities. This development comes two weeks after massive demonstrations that, alongside street protests, inflicted severe damage on retail stores, public facilities, and corporations.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the anti-government gatherings as riots during a press conference last week, asserting that the nation’s leadership will not permit a repetition of past disturbances. He emphasized that security institutions remain on full alert to guarantee a very firm response to any public disorder, estimating the probability of violence on this day as extremely high.

Concurrently, French officials are preparing for the possibility that agitators might utilize Halloween masks to conceal their identities. In this regard, Nuñez stated that legal regulations empower security forces to prohibit face coverings when public order is under threat. Furthermore, the United States Embassy has advised its citizens planning travel to avoid areas hosting marches or large gatherings.

Tensions in France intensified in late September, coinciding with the government’s initiation of discussions regarding the 2027 budget bill. These protests emerged amid mounting pressures to control government expenditures, with France’s public debt reaching 120 percent of gross domestic product, while rising borrowing costs have further restricted the government’s fiscal flexibility.

Student protesters demanding improvements in school quality, reduced classroom overcrowding, and fairer university admission structures have joined the demonstrations. Meanwhile, labor unions and the Yellow Vests movement have re-emerged, demanding effective solutions to curb inflation and the rising cost of living.

The resonance of these protests has extended beyond French borders, inspiring youth-led movements in other European nations. Demonstrations are scheduled to take place in more than 30 cities across Germany on Saturday.

These developments unfold as France’s economic structure contends with severe pressures. Data released on Friday indicated economic stagnation in the country during the third quarter. The Chamber of Commerce has estimated the damage to the retail sector at over one billion euros, while other assessments suggest that total losses could double when factoring in uninsured damages and lost profits.
