Data published by RealClearPolitics has drawn widespread attention to nine critical swing states across the United States, where fiercely contested midterm elections will ultimately decide which party controls Congress and dictate how effectively President Donald Trump can advance his policy initiatives over the next two years.

The crucial battleground states under close observation include Michigan, Texas, Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Nebraska, Ohio, and South Carolina. Current polling findings across the nation indicate a relative advantage for the Democratic Party as the electorate prepares to decide all 435 seats in the House of Representatives alongside 35 out of the 100 seats in the Senate. Republicans currently hold a 53-to-47 majority in the Senate, meaning Democrats require a net gain of just four seats to secure majority control.

In Michigan, Democratic candidate Abdulrahman El-Sayed holds a commanding lead over his Republican opponent Mike Rogers. CNN polling data indicates that the Democratic candidate commands 49 percent support compared to 42 percent for Rogers. Meanwhile, in Texas, Democratic contender James Talarico has edged ahead with 49 percent of the vote against Republican Ken Paxton’s 43 percent. In Kansas—a state that has not elected a Democratic senator since 1932—Democratic candidate Adam Hamilton leads Republican Roger Marshall by 49 percent to 45 percent.

Additional polling reveals that Democratic candidate Mary Peltola has taken a narrow lead over Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan in Alaska. In South Carolina, Republican Darlina Graham and Democrat Annie Andrews are locked in a dead heat, with each candidate capturing 48 percent of the vote. In Maine, Democratic nominee Troy Jackson stands ahead of Susan Collins with 49 percent to 45 percent, while former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown is mounting a strong campaign in Ohio to reclaim his seat, leading Republican candidate Jon Husted in several recent surveys.
