According to the report of the international group Tasnim news agency quoting Novosti news agency, the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Estonia announced on its official website on Friday that the defense ministers of the three Baltic Sea countries – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – have agreed to create a joint defense zone on their border with Russia and Belarus.

According to this information, these defense lines will be created in the coming years, and the purpose of their creation will be deterrence and protection against possible military threats from Moscow and Minsk.

Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pokor said: “The Baltic Defense Zone is a carefully thought-out project that is needed due to the current security situation. Russia’s military action in Ukraine showed that the Baltic countries, in addition to equipment, ammunition and manpower, also need physical defense facilities on their borders with Russia and its ally – Belarus, in order to protect the first meters of the border lines with these two countries. .”

The defense ministers also signed an agreement to create a framework for the joint use of HIMARS multiple launch missile systems.

A few days ago, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kalas said that Europe has three to five years to prepare for the fact that Russia may pose a threat to NATO’s eastern flank. He believed that in the long term, the North Atlantic Alliance needs to adopt a serious strategy to deter Russia, similar to what was active during the Cold War.
