The ISIS terrorist group, which controlled the eastern part of Iraq for a while, started killing civilians, especially religious and religious minorities. Although this terrorist group is greatly weakened and no longer has the territory of the past, but the elements of this group are still active. Therefore, different countries are looking to prosecute these people.
According to the Reuters news agency, the German police announced today (Wednesday) the arrest of an Iraqi couple accused of membership in the ISIS terrorist organization.
The German prosecutor says: this couple named Tawana and Asiah are accused of participating in genocide and crimes against humanity regarding two Yazidi girls. The husband and wife were arrested on Tuesday in Iraq and Syria for their treatment of the two girls in 2015-2017.
German prosecutors report physical abuse, repeated sexual assaults, and the prohibition of these Yazidi girls from performing religious rituals related to their religion during these years. Before leaving Syria in November 2017, the couple handed over the two girls to other ISIS members.
German judicial authorities say that these actions were carried out with the aim of destroying the Yazidi religion.
According to the judicial procedure in Germany, the judiciary of this country has the power in the jurisdiction to prosecute and hold a trial for any crime against humanity in any part of the world.
In one case in 2021, the German prosecutor’s office sentenced a former member of the ISIS organization to life imprisonment for genocide and crimes against humanity against the Yazidis.
