Strong reaction of the United Nations to the discovery of a mass grave in Libya

The head of the UN human rights office criticized the widespread torture and ill-treatment of refugees in Libya.

The discovery of a mass grave on the border between Libya and Tunisia has now provoked international reactions. 

According to the Reuters news agency, Volker Turk, the head of the United Nations Human Rights Office, said today (Tuesday): Our office has received reports about the discovery of this mass grave in the desert on the border between Libya and Tunisia has received This report comes while we saw the discovery of the bodies of at least 65 refugees in another place this year. 

In his speech, he condemned the widespread violence against migrants and refugees in Libya, and described the path of these refugees to the Mediterranean Sea through the desert in Libya as very dangerous. 

Turk, who was speaking at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, noted: Abuse of asylum seekers is widely carried out by state and non-state actors, and these wrongdoers are immune from prosecution for their actions. Human trafficking, torture, forced labor, extortion, forced starvation, detention, and mass deportations are among the most important cases of abuse against innocent asylum seekers. 

This UN official stressed: I ask the Libyan authorities to urgently respond to our requests and fully investigate the occurrence of these crimes. 

Volker Türk refused to provide more details about the identity of the suspects of this mass killing, as well as how the mass grave was discovered.
