French Prime Minister Resigns After Just 27 Days in Office
Sebastien lecornu, France’s recently appointed prime minister, resigned today after serving in the role for less than a month, according to the English section of webangah news Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Sky News.
The Élysée Palace announced that President Emmanuel Macron has accepted Lecornu’s resignation.
The unexpected resignation came just hours after Lecornu had formed his cabinet, amid political opponents threatening to bring down his goverment.
Yesterday, Lecornu announced his ministerial appointments. The new cabinet was scheduled to hold its first meeting this afternoon.
though, the cabinet lineup sparked outrage among both allies and critics-some accusing it of leaning too far right while others argued it was not right-wing enough.
The 39-year-old Lecornu was the seventh prime minister appointed by President Macron and the fifth within two years. Macron named him prime minister on September 9.
Lecornu’s sudden departure triggered a sharp drop in French stock markets and weakened the euro. he now holds the record for France’s shortest-serving prime minister since 1958.
