Iraq Achieves Security, Says UN Chief Guterres During Baghdad Visit

UN Secretary-General António Guterres lauded Iraq’s improved security situation and successful parliamentary elections during a press conference with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in Baghdad. Guterres affirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Iraq’s stability and its efforts to reintegrate citizens from the Al-Hol camp in Syria.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani stated during a press conference with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in Baghdad that Iraq has triumphed over terrorism through the sacrifices of its people.

Al-Sudani emphasized that the end of UNAMI’s mission does not signify the end of partnership with Iraq, highlighting the importance of their relationship with the UNAMI delegation. He also noted that the recent parliamentary elections were the most organized to date.

“We are willing to establish balanced relations with the United Nations,” Al-Sudani said, adding that Iraq has adopted a balanced policy during a sensitive time for the region and the world. The Prime Minister praised the election of former Iraqi President Barham Salih as the UN Commissioner for Refugees.

Secretary-General Guterres congratulated Iraq on its successful parliamentary elections, acknowledging the country’s courage, stability, and determination in overcoming terrorism. “Iraq today is a country with security,” he stated.

Guterres mentioned discussing the situation in Gaza with the Iraqi Prime Minister, emphasizing the need to respect the ceasefire. He also highlighted the UN’s goal of supporting Iraq and its government, expressing appreciation for Iraq’s commitment to returning its citizens from the Al-Hol camp in Syria.

“It is a source of pride for the United Nations to play a role in Iraq,” Guterres noted. “Iraq is now a normal country, and the world must understand this.”
