Federal Judge Halts Key Aspects of Trump’s Postal Voting Regulations

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a federal judge on Thursday suspended the primary components of new U.S. Postal Service regulations. These regulations were established at the behest of U.S. President Donald Trump to intensify requirements for mail-in voting in anticipation of the November congressional elections.

U.S. District Court Judge Indra Talwani in Boston issued a temporary restraining order at the request of Democrat-led states and voting rights advocacy groups. This action follows a Supreme Court ruling earlier in the week that vacated previous injunctions aimed at blocking Trump’s initiatives to curtail mail-in voting.

The Supreme Court’s decision prompted dozens of state attorneys general, predominantly Democrats, and voting rights organizations, including the League of Women Voters of the United States, to swiftly engage in a new legal challenge. Their objective is to prevent the implementation of regulations that would have allowed the U.S. Postal Service to enact them starting Wednesday.

Talwani’s restraining order will remain in effect until she makes a determination on issuing a longer-term preliminary injunction to block the regulations. The judge is scheduled to review whether to grant such an injunction during a hearing on September 3. Talwani was appointed to the judiciary by former Democratic President Barack Obama.

Under these regulations, states are mandated to provide lists of mail-in ballot recipients to the U.S. Postal Service. Furthermore, all envelopes containing ballots sent to voters, as well as their return envelopes, are required to bear unique barcodes.
