Iraqi Presidency Rejects Trump’s Interventionist Stance, Emphasizes Sovereignty

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Iraqi Presidency released a statement on Thursday strongly opposing any external meddling in its political affairs. The statement emphasized that Iraq’s internal matters are strictly sovereign issues to be decided solely by Iraqis through their constitutional and democratic processes.
The Presidency declared that respect for Iraq’s national sovereignty is a fundamental pillar in building the country and consolidating political stability, particularly in the government formation process following last year’s November elections, which saw broad participation from across Iraqi society.
Iraq reiterated its commitment to pursuing a balanced foreign policy based on openness and positive cooperation with all nations, strengthening relations founded on mutual respect and non-interference, while working toward shared interests that contribute to regional and international security and stability.
This statement comes after Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council stressed the need to adhere to legal timelines for selecting the Prime Minister and President, urging political factions to respect national independence and prevent any interference in the government formation process.
The Iraqi response follows controversial remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who had warned that America would withdraw support from Iraq if Nouri al-Malaki were to become Prime Minister.
