Spain Seeks Replacement for Canceled Israeli Weapons Systems, Eyes European MELLS Missile

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Spanish defense authorities are currently evaluating the procurement of the MELLS system as a direct substitute for the canceled Spike missiles ordered from the Israeli firm Rafael. This exploration follows Madrid’s definitive decision to terminate the original military contract with the Israeli entity.
The primary objective behind this pivot is to resolve immediate shortfalls in anti-tank hardware facing the Spanish Army while ensuring the sustained operational capability of the nation’s military forces moving forward. Maria Amparo Valcarce, a Spanish defense official, informed the Defense Committee of the nation’s Parliament that the acquisition of the MELLS system is under active consideration.
The MELLS system is recognized as the European variant of the Spike LR2 missile. This entire reconsideration stems from Madrid’s announcement last September to halt weapon purchases from the Israeli regime, citing the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
The initial contract that was subsequently voided stipulated the purchase of 168 launchers and 1,680 missiles, valued at €287.5 million. A crucial condition attached to any subsequent procurement is that any equipment supplied to Spain must be entirely free of any components originating from Israeli production.
