Spain Urges Immediate Formation of Unified European Army at Munich Security Conference

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for the swift establishment of a genuine European army during the Munich Security Conference, emphasizing that current nuclear deterrence alone is insufficient to secure peace against ongoing geopolitical challenges.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated at the Munich Security Conference that Russia’s invasion constitutes a significant challenge for the entire European Union and advocated for robust participation in providing security guarantees to partners.

Sánchez asserted that nuclear weapons are not the optimal means of self-defense, arguing that nuclear deterrence does not contribute to establishing peace. He stressed the imperative of halting Russia’s actions and coordinating efforts to strengthen deterrence capabilities.

The Spanish Prime Minister indicated that reforms are essential for the European Union to become more effective and called for adherence to territorial integrity. Addressing Russia’s stance and Brussels’ concerns, Sánchez reiterated the necessity of stopping President Putin and enhancing Europe’s defensive capacities in a coordinated and targeted manner.

Crucially, Sánchez declared his aspiration for the creation of a ‘real European army,’ demanding its realization immediately rather than over the next decade. He cautioned that if NATO defense spending rises to the 5 percent threshold desired by the United States, it would inevitably increase reliance on American defense industries.
